Worship Music

We learned through our NICU journey that we needed to combat all the negatives with lots of positives. We wanted anxious thoughts to be overcome with peaceful ones. We found that one of the best ways for us to do that was to listen to worship music that filled us with hope as we were reminded of who God is, and how He comes near to the brokenhearted. We listed several below that really spoke to us while in the NICU and in the healing journey that followed. We encourage you to search for additional ones that pierce your heart and bring comfort. Make a playlist and put it on repeat. Ask NICU staff if you can play music in the room for your baby even when you’re not there that way they can also be surrounded by encouraging words. We pray these songs bless you and encourage you as much as they did, and still do, for us.

Peace Over You

I remember when I first heard this song it was perfect for our situation. He was talking about “peace in the room”, “life to come into the room”, “hope to come into the room”. It became my go to song that I listened to every time I would drive to the hospital. Then one day while listening to it I felt God tell me “peace over you isn’t just for Beckham its for you as well”. I really needed to hear that because I was really struggling with peace through our journey.

Joy in the Morning

“If it doesn’t make sense right now, it will when it’s over”. That line resonated so strongly with me. Sometimes during the hardest parts of our lives it’s really hard to find the positive in every situation. Often the positive doesn’t show up for a long time, but then one day you look back at the situation and see the joy in it or the purpose in it. This song really helped me through the healing part, after we were home from the NICU and trying to process what we had been through. The joy in the morning was finally showing up and it will for you too.

Surrounded (Fight my Battles)

When you are in the NICU it can feel like a battle. You feel like the enemy has you surrounded and there is no way out. This is when you have to trust that it is truly God surrounding you and your baby. How we chose to fight this battle was through praise and worship songs just like these. Keep pressing on and don’t give up, but also allow God to fight your battles for you.

See A Victory

This song didn’t really hit me until we were out of the NICU. At that time Beckham was only about 6 months and we were still trying to figure out what life looked like and recovering from the emotions and anxiety of the whole journey. I remember being in a church service holding Beckham and we started singing this song and I remember praying “God, I want to see a victory”. God spoke to me and said “You are holding the victory right now”. So many times we don’t even realize the victory that we are holding onto and we have to be reminded of that.

Fear is Not my Future

“Let Him turn it in your favor, watch Him work it for His good. He’s not done with what He started, He’s not done until it’s good.” These lines brought tears to my eyes when I first heard them. This song didn’t come out until after we were out of the NICU, but the words took me straight back to our time there. As you listen to this song be encouraged that God will use this journey for His good and that He’s not done until it’s good. I know the journey can be long and scary but standing on the other side we can see how He’s used this for His good.

Heaven’s All Around

This was another song that I really enjoy listening to. The title itself says it all “Heavens All Around”. This is such a comforting song to listen to. Sometimes on this journey you can feel like you are alone and nobody else knows what you are going through. Jesus knows and He is there with you, even if it doesn’t feel like it. So don’t leave him out of it, if you invite him in He will definitely show up.

Million Little Miracles

In the NICU amidst the struggles you will see many miracles. The first time your baby takes a bottle or nurses. The first time they breathe on their own without oxygen. Every little ounce of weight gained. You will actually get to witness the miracle of life and development of a baby on the outside of the womb. This song reminds you to be thankful of every little miracle even as you’re walking down a hard road. “Every day there’s a miracle” and that is certainly true in the NICU journey.

In Jesus Name

The name of Jesus, so powerful. Sometimes when you don’t have any words you can just say His name. There were many times we didn’t have the right words to say, or even the right words to pray. Listen to the words in this song and let them wash over you. Let them soak into your soul. “He is greater, He is stronger, He’s the God of possible”.
