  • Neonatal Intensive Care Unit.

A hospital department that is equipped and staffed to care for premature babies.

  • Bradycardia

It is a slow heart that is common among premature infants. Often times nurses will help to stimulate the infant to help get the heart rate to a normal level

  • Desaturation

This is a decrease in the oxygen level. Moderate desaturation is 80-89% with severe being below 80%. This is typically treated with an increase in oxygen flow to the infant.

  • Jaundice occurs when an infants blood has too much bilirubin.

It is normal to have bilirubin in your blood and typically the kidneys help to filter that out. In premature babies sometimes they have a hard time filtering it out so their levels in their blood work are high. To treat this you baby may be put under a special light for phototherapy.
